Bertoni, Ferdinando Gasparo
Bertoni, Ferdinando Gasparo (b Saló, Brescia, 1725; d Desenzano, Brescia, 1813). It. composer. Org. St Mark's Venice, 1752–85. Comp. Orfeo (1776) to same lib. as Gluck, also using some of Gluck's mus. Two visits to London (1778–80 and 1781–3) to conduct his own operas (of which he wrote about 50) at King's Th. Became choirmaster at St Mark's 1785 on death of Galuppi, retiring in 1808. Most successful works were Le pescatrici (1751) and Artaserse (1785).
