Arnold, Johann Gottfried

Arnold, Johann Gottfried, German cellist and composer, father of carl arnold; b. Niedernhall, Feb. 1, 1773; d. Frankfurt am Main, July 26, 1806. He received early music instruction from his father, a schoolmaster, and made his first public appearance as a cellist at the age of 8. After further training in Kunzelsau and with his uncle in Wertheim, he studied cello with Willmann in Regensburg and with Romberg in Hamburg. In 1797 he became solo cellist in the orch. of the Frankfurt am Main Opera. He composed a Symphonie concertante for 2 Flutes and Orch., 5 cello concertos (1802–08), chamber music, and solo pieces for cello.
