Amengual (-Astaburuaga), René, Chilean composer and teacher; b. Santiago, Sept. 2, 1911; d.there, Aug. 2, 1954. He studied with Allende at Santiago’s National Cons. (1923–35), where he subsequently taught (from 1935) and was its director (from 1945). His early works followed along French lines but he later developed an expressionist idiom
