Water ★★ 2005 (PG-13)

Following Hindu custom in 1938 India, when child bride Chuyia's (Sarala) aged husband dies, her family sends her to live in exile in an ashram for widows. Chuyia can't understand and rebels against the restrictions until she is befriended by religious, middle-aged Shankuntala (Biswas) and beautiful, young Kalyani (Ray). Kalyani is forced to work as a prostitute to help support the ashram but falls in love with Narayan (Abraham), whose progressive views are inspired by Gandhi. However, their involvement leads to both tragedy and freedom. The last of Mehta's trilogy following “Fire” and “Earth.” Hindi with subtitles. 117m/C DVD .
