Career: Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, assistant professor of English, 1955-60; California State University, Northridge, assistant professor, 1960-63, associate professor, 1963-66, professor of English, 1966-, now emeritus. Three-time chairman of Dickens seminar for Modern Language Association of America; lecturer in U.S. and abroad. Reader for periodicals. Consultant for public and private organizations.
