Sarafina is a young girl in a township school in Soweto, South Africa in the mid'70s, gradually coming into a political awakening amid the Soweto riots. Khumalo recreates her stage role as the glowing and defiant Sarafina with both Goldberg and Makeba good in their roles as Sarafina's outspoken and inspirational teacher and her longsuffering mother, respectively.
