Deneuve stars as elegant alcoholic Marianne Malivert, who finds a new interest after her husband's (Fresson) suicide. A prominent jeweler with a shop on the fashionable Place Vendome, he was unable to confess that the business is bankrupt and his connections shady. Instead, he leaves Marianne with seven priceless diamonds that turn out to be stolen, which rekindles her business instincts (she's a former gem broker) and places her in danger.
