The New World ★★★★ 2005 (PG-13)

Malick's vision offers the story of Pocahontas (Kilcher), stripped of its revisionist history and cartoon-fantasy world and elevated to a mythic retelling of the establishment of an American colony by the London based Virginia Co., which brought Captain John Smith (Ferrell) in contact with the Powhatan Indians. As the story surrounding Fort James unfolds, Malick brings into question the motives and desires of Pocahontas, Smith, and later John Rolfe (Bale), the tobacco farmer who eventually marries Pocahontas and brings her back home to England. Ends up as a beautifully crafted metaphor for the effect Europe had on the new world and vice versa. 160m/C DVD .
