The Mill on the Floss ★★½ 1997

Maggie Tulliver (Watson) is a smart, emotional young woman painfully at odds with her conventional times. She adores her intolerant older brother Tom (Mere dith) but when Maggie becomes involved with Philip Wakeum (Frain), the son of their father Edward's (Hill) greatest ene my, she reluctantly acquieses when Tom forbids the romance. When Stephen Guest (Weber-Brown), the fiance of Mag gie's cousin Lucy (Whybrow), falls in love with her, his attentions bring scandal and tragedy to both Maggie and Tom. Watson is fine as the harried heroine but Meredith seems too young for his role, upsetting the sibling balance between the two. Based on the novel by George Eliot. 90m/C VHS GB Emily Watson, Ifan Meredith, James Frain, Bernard Hill, James Weber-Brown, Lucy Whybrow, Nicholas Gecks, Cheryl Campbell; D: Graham Theakston; W: Hugh Stoddart; C: David C(lark) Johnson; M: John Scott.
