East German censors tried to ban Carow's film, which focuses on personal freedoms, but it proved to be so popular with audiences that the ban never worked. Paula (Domrose) is a free-spirited unmarried salesclerk with two children while Paul (Glatzeder) is a conservative bureaucrat in a loveless marriage. They met by accident and fall in love while Paula tries to liberate Paul from his dull existence. But Paul finds it difficult to let go—until tragedy beset them.
