The Grey Zone
The Grey Zone ★★ 2001 (R)
Nelson adapted his own play, which centers on the Sonderkommandos, Jewish prisoners who worked in the crematoriums (in this case at Auschwitz), disposed of remains, and were given special privileges by the Nazis. In October of 1944, the prisoners plan an uprising and blew up two of the gas chambers. The film can't transcend its theatrical origins and is both surreal and excruciating (since Nelson doesn't spare depicting the atrocities) to watch. 108m/C VHS, DVD . US David Arquette, Daniel Benzali, Steve Buscemi, David Chandler, Allan Corduner, Harvey Keitel, Natasha Lyonne, Mira Sorvino; D: Tim Blake Nelson; W: Tim Blake Nelson; C: Russell Fine; M: Jeff Danna.
