Freedomland ★★½ 2006 (R)

White girl (Moore) from “the right side of the tracks” walks into a medical center in the projects with the story of a carjacking/ kidnapping of her son. Black detective Lorenzo (Jackson) must find out the truth and prevent a riot as the cops, one of whom (Eldard) is her brother, lock down the neighborhood. Tension is effectively built as Lorenzo works the case while trying to balance his allegiances to his instincts, his neighborhood, and his job. Jackson's presence is vital to keeping the movie from spinning out of control into preachy “good-for-you” territory. Still gets a bit heavy, and more than a little depressing. 113m/C DVD . US Samuel L. Jackson, Julianne Moore, Edie Falco, Ron Eldard, William Forsythe, Aunjanue Ellis, Anthony Mackie, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Clarke Peters; D: Joe Roth; W: Richard Price; C: Anastas Michos; M: James Newton Howard.
