Bill (Boothe) moves his family to Brazil where he has a job as an engineer working on a dam project. His young son Tommy wanders into the rainforest and is taken in by a primitive tribe of Amazons. Bill searches 10 years for him, finally discovering a happily adjusted teenager named Tomme (Boorman, the director's son), who may not want to return to so-called civilization.
