Walter-Martin, Steffi
East German Olympic luge champion . Name variations: Steffi Martin.
East Germany's Steffi Walter-Martin had already won a gold medal in the dangerous sport of luge at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics when she took the 1987 season off to have a child. To the dismay of competitors who hoped she might retire, the defending world champion went immediately back into vigorous training and qualified for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. There Walter-Martin again took the gold with a time of 3:03.973 while two of her teammates took second and third, maintaining the East Germany domination that had begun with the sport's inception in 1964.
