Walter, Georg A., German tenor, pedagogue, and composer; b. Hoboken, N.J., Nov. 13, 1875; d. Berlin, Sept. 13, 1952. He studied singing in Milan, Dresden, Berlin, and London, and composition with Wilhelm Berger in Berlin. He made a career as a singer, particularly distinguishing himself in the works of Bach and Handel. He was a prof, at the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik (1925-34), then settled in Berlin as a vocal teacher; his most celebrated student was Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He brought out new eds. of works by the sons of Bach, Schütz et al.
