McMillan, Margaret (1860–1931)

American-born English reformer . Born in New York in 1860; died in 1931; brought up in Inverness, Scotland; sister of Rachel McMillan (1859–1917).

A pioneer of nursery schools, Margaret McMillan campaigned tirelessly for medical inspection of schoolchildren and school clinics in the north of England. In 1902, she joined her sister Rachel McMillan in London. In 1908, the McMillan sisters opened their first school clinic, and their first open-air nursery in Deptford in 1914. Numerous nursery school openings followed. When Rachel died in 1917, Margaret carried on the work with the mystical belief that they were still working together; she dedicated the Rachel McMillan Training College for nursery teachers, also in Deptford, to her sister.
