Hesse-Bukowska, Barbara (1930—)
Polish pianist, widely known for her performances of contemporary Polish composers. Born in Lodz, Poland, on June 1, 1930.
Barbara Hesse-Bukowska studied at the Warsaw Conservatory with Margherita Trombini-Kazuro and won second prize at the Chopin Competition in 1949. In 1953, she received the Chopin prize at the Long-Thibaud Competition. Her tours have taken her throughout Europe as well as India and Japan. In 1973, she began teaching at the Warsaw Academy of Music. Hesse-Bukowska was applauded for her Chopin interpretations and has recorded for both Polish and American recording firms. She is also known for her performances of contemporary Polish composers, whose works she championed.
