Anderson, Lucy (1797–1878)

English pianist and famous English concert artist of her era. Born Lucy Philpot on December 12, 1797, in Bath, England; died in London on December 24, 1878; married George Frederick Anderson (1793–1876).

Performing Hummel's B minor Concerto, Lucy Anderson was the first woman pianist to play at a concert of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London. While her husband George Frederick Anderson served as Master of the Queen's Musick from 1848 to 1870, Lucy taught piano to Queen Victoria and her children. Anderson had a long and successful career, appearing the last time at the Royal Philharmonic concerts in 1862 as soloist in Beethoven's Choral Fantasia. A contemporary critic noted her "delicate touch and legitimate style."
