Byzantine empress. Name variations: Sophia Monteferrata; Monferrato; Empress of Nicaea. Born of Italian ancestry; became 2nd wife of her cousin John VIII Paleologus (1391–1448), emperor of Nicaea (r. 1425–1448), then divorced.
John VIII's 1st wife was Anna of Moscow (1393–1417); his 3rd was Maria of Trebizond.
