Sass, Marie Constance (1834–1907)

Belgian soprano. Name variations: Marie Sax. Born in Ghent on January 26, 1834; died in Auteuil near Paris on November 8, 1907; married the baritone Castelmary (divorced 1867).

Marie Constance Sass was born in Ghent in 1834. She was a chansonette-singer in a Paris café, singing under the name Marie Sax, before being discovered and taught by Mme Ugalde . Sass made her debut as a soprano at the Théâtre-Lyrique in 1859. She appeared at the Paris Opéra from 1860 to 1871, and in Italy in 1864.
