American stage and screen actress. Name variations: Lucille LaVerne. Born Lucille Mitchum, Nov 8 (some sources cite Nov 7), 1869, in Memphis, TN; died Mar 4, 1945, in Culver City, CA.
Began career on stage as a child actress; had 1st NY stage success as Corin in As You Like It in an all-woman cast (1894); best remembered as Widow Cagle in Sun-Up (1923–27); appeared in numerous films, silent and talking. The La Verne Empire theater in Richmond, Virginia, was named after her.
