Kolstad, Eva (1918–1998)

Norwegian politician. Born Eva Lundegaard in Halder, Norway, in 1918; died on March 26, 1998; qualified as an independent chartered accountant, 1944.

Norway's Eva Kolstad trained as an accountant and worked as a bookkeeping teacher before becoming active in the cause of women's rights. She began her political career with the International Alliance of Women and was a member of the board from 1949 to 1958, from 1961 to 1968, and again in 1973. She served as president of the Norwegian Association for the Rights of Women (1956–68) and was a member of the UN Committee on the Status of Women (1969–75). She was also a member of the Oslo City Council from 1960 to 1975. Concurrently, Kolstad served two terms as a member of Parliament (1958–61 and 1966–69). Her last term was marked by her leadership on the Government Council on the Equal Status of Men and Women. Kolstad was later appointed as Ombudsman, serving from 1977 to 1988.
