French-Brazilian obstetrician. Born Marie Josefina Mathilde Durocher, 1809, in Paris, France; died 1893; moved with family to Brazil at age 8; married and widowed young; children: 2.
Influenced by teaching of Marie Boivin, entered medical school at age 24 in Rio de Janiero and received 1st diploma granted there (1834), one of the 1st female doctors in Latin America; practiced for 60 years; elected to titular membership of National Academy of Medicine (1871).
