Dickey, Sarah (1838–1904)

American educator of freedmen. Born Sarah Ann Dickey, April 25, 1838, near Dayton, Ohio; died Jan 23, 1904, in Clinton, Mississippi; dau. of Isaac Dickey; mother's maiden name was Tryon; graduate of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, 1869; never married; no children.

Joined staff of United Brethren freedmen's school, Vicksburg, MS (1863); despite threats from Ku Klux Klan, opened the Mount Hermon Female Seminary, a nonsectarian boarding school for African-American girls in Clinton, MS (1875); established Dickeyville settlement which provided land on credit and other assistance to African-Americans (1890s).
