Bryant, Hazel (1939–1983)

African-American producer and singer. Born 1939; died Nov 7, 1983, in New York, NY; dau. of a preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal Church; graduate of Oberlin, 1962; attended Columbia University.

Toured in opera; as a major promoter of black theater, produced over 200 musicals and plays, including Langston Hughes' Black Nativity and O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night, with an all-black cast; organized the Black Theatre Alliance and founded the Richard Allen Center for Culture and Arts.
