Barry, Ann Street (1734–1801)

Irish actress. Name variations: Mrs. Spranger Barry, Mrs. Barry, Ann Crawford, Ann Dancer. Born in Bath, England, in 1734; died on November 29, 1801; married an actor named Dancer; married Spranger Barry (an Irish actor), in 1768 (died 1777); married a Mr. Crawford, in 1778.

While very young, Ann Barry married an actor named Dancer, and she first appeared on the stage about 1756 under the name Ann Dancer. In 1768, she married Spranger Barry, considered one of the greatest actors of his time and rival of David Garrick. One year after his death in 1777, she married a Mr. Crawford. Ann Barry, not to be confused with actress Elizabeth Barry , was considered the equal of Peg Woffington and Susannah Cibber in tragedy and to have surpassed both in comedy. When she died on November 29, 1801, she was buried near her second husband Spranger Barry in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey.
