Anstrude of Laon (fl. 7th c.)

Frankish abbess. Flourished in 7th century; daughter of Blandinus Boson and Salaberga of Laon (Frankish nobles).

Anstrude of Laon, daughter of the Frankish nobles Blandinus Boson and Salaberga of Laon , served as one of early medieval Europe's great abbesses. After her husband's death, Salaberga entered a convent in Laon and eventually became its abbess. Anstrude followed her mother into the religious life, taking a nun's vows at age 12. Highly educated, she showed a considerable depth of piety. After Salaberga's death, Anstrude was chosen to act as abbess of Laon, supervising the spiritual and material well-being of both the convent and the monastery. She earned widespread admiration for her faith and great administrative skills. During Anstrude's term, Laon became one of France's most important learning centers; the nuns were educated in both ancient and contemporary studies, and Anstrude also managed a scriptorium where books were copied and illustrated.
