Vaughan Fredrick Randall Jones

1952-

New Zealand-American mathematician who received his Ph.D. in Switzerland in 1979. He taught mathematics at many prestigious universities, including the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of California at Berkeley. He received the Fields Medal in 1990 for his work on the index theorem for von Neumann algebra as well as the discovery of a new polynomial invariant for knots.
