American physicist whose work with Robert Maurer and Donald Keck led to the development of the first useable optical fibers able to transmit data over long distances. Scientists had attempted to transmit images over long distances through glass fibers for nearly a century, but were unsuccessful because of the relative opacity of thick glass with high levels of impurities that existed at the time.
