1882-1971
American anatomist known for his research on female reproduction and the pituitary gland. In 1915 Evans was appointed chairman to the University of California's Department of Anatomy. He described the estrous cycle of the female rat, which led to research on the influence of vitamins on fertility, confirmed the pituitary gland's role in growth, and isolated growth hormone from the anterior pituitary secretion. He is also noted for incorrectly identifying 48 chromosomes in human cells in 1918.
