Sillaginidae (southern whiting; subclass Actinopterygii, order Perciformes) A small family of marine fish that have an elongate, almost cylindrical body, small mouth, and two separate dorsal fins which are of about equal size. The second dorsal and the anal fin are about equal in length. Often travelling in schools, southern whiting are found in the Indo-Pacific region. There are about seven species. They are not related to the northern whiting (Gadidae).
