The vertical axis represents depth, and the proportions or absolute amounts of the various pollen types occurring at different levels are shown by bar histograms or by points on a continuous curve. Conventionally, similar patterns are grouped together on the diagram, with arboreal types shown first, followed in turn by shrubs, herbs, and spores.
