Pedionomidae (plains-wanderer; class Aves, order Gruiformes) A monospecific family (Pedionomus torquatus) which is a small, quail-like bird, mainly brown, with loose plumage. It has a neck longer than those of quails, and tends to stand erect. Its feet have a hind toe. A terrestrial species, rarely flying, it is found in open grassland, feeds on insects and seeds, and nests on the ground. It is confined to Australia.
