Oreosomatidae (subclass Actinopterygii, order Zeiformes) A small family of marine fish that have certain features in common with the Zeidae (John Dories), e.g. the large, distensible mouth, a deep, compressed body, large eyes, and a small tail fin. Neocyttus rhomboidalis (spiky dory), which is typical of the family, lives at depths of more than 600 m near the coasts of S. Africa and southern Australia. There are about seven species, distributed worldwide.
