Neckera (order Isobryales) A genus of mosses in which the shoots are typically flattened, and pinnately or bipinnately branched. The leaves are usually glossy and in some species are wrinkled transversely; they either lack a nerve or have a very short nerve visible under the microscope. There are about 120 species, found chiefly in tropical and subtropical regions. They grow on trees, rocks, and on the ground, usually preferring neutral or basic (alkaline) substrates.
