Bathylagidae (deep-sea smelts, black smelts; subclass Actinopterygii, order Salmoniformes) A family of small (15 cm) open-ocean fish with large eyes, a small mouth, and varying body shape, probably they undertake vertical migrations between different ocean depths. There are about 35 species.
