POMERANTZ, SIDNEY IRVING

POMERANTZ, SIDNEY IRVING (1909–1975), U.S. historian. Pomerantz was born in New York and taught at City College, rising to the rank of professor of history in 1960. He was a pioneer in the study of American urban history, with particular emphasis on the role of the press and business enterprise as determinants of metropolitan growth. His best-known work is New York, an American City, 1783–1803 (19652).

The history department of the City University of New York has established the Sidney I. Pomerantz Prize for the best essay on the history of New York City written in an elective course.
