MITCHELL, YVONNE

MITCHELL, YVONNE (1925–1979), British actress and writer. Born in London, Yvonne Mitchell made her adult debut in 1944 in Cradle Song, and subsequently acted in Shakespeare, Ibsen, Shaw, Turgenev, and Pirandello. Her own play, The Same Sky, won the Festival of Britain Prize in 1950. She made her New York debut in The Wall in 1960. Mitchell appeared in 11 films between 1949 and 1976, winning the bafta Best Actress award in 1955 for her role in The Divided Heart. Her best-known film was probably Woman in a Dressing-Gown (1963). Her novels include A Year in Time (1964) and The Family (1967).
