Mitchinson, John (b Blackrod, Lancs., 1932). Eng. tenor. Founder-member of BBC Northern Singers, 1953. Sang in concert perf. Don Giovanni, Chelsea Opera Group, 1955. Operatic stage début 1959 (Jupiter in Handel's Semele for Handel Opera Soc.). Successful career in concert hall and opera house. Sang with ENO 1972–8 and WNO 1978–82. Notable interpreter of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex.
