MANNES
MANNES , family of musicians. david mannes (1866–1959), U.S. violinist and conductor, was interested in civic betterment. In 1912 he founded the Music School Settlement for Colored People, New York. In 1916 he founded the David Mannes School of Music, with a faculty of eminent musicians. He published an autobiography, Music is My Faith (1938). He married clara damrosch mannes (1869–1948), a pianist and the daughter of conductor Leopold *Damrosch. His son, leopold *mannes (1899–1964), a pianist and teacher and inventor, succeeded his father as director of the Mannes School.
