FOREIRO (Forerius, Forerio), FRANCISCO°

FOREIRO (Forerius, Forerio), FRANCISCO ° (1510–1581), Portuguese Dominican and Hebrew scholar. Foreiro evinced a marked linguistic ability at an early age and was sent to Paris to study Greek and Hebrew. He represented King Sebastian of Portugal at the Council of Trent, where he was jointly responsible for preparing the Index librorum prohibitorum (Rome, 1564). His Latin translation of Isaiah from the Hebrew, Isaiaeprophetae vetus et nova ex hebraico versio, cum commentario, was published in Venice in 1563, and he prepared a Hebrew lexicon as well as commentaries to the Prophets, Job, Psalms, and the biblical books ascribed to Solomon; all these remained unprinted.
