BARBOSA, AGOSTINO

Bishop and canonist; b. Guimarens, Portugal, 1589; d. Nov. 19, 1649. He studied canon law in Portugal and in Rome. He was noted for his sanctity, affability, and prodigious memory. In 1632 he went to Madrid and functioned as an ecclesiastical judge. In 1648 he was nominated as bishop of Ungento, in Otranto, by Philip IV. His many writings are noted for their erudition and familiarity with authors, sources, and controverted questions. His most important work is the Historia iuris ecclesiastici universi libri tres (Lyons 1633, 1645, 1718). He also published a commentary on the Council of Trent, which was later placed on the Index; a compendium of law; and a juridical lexicon. All his works were published at Lyons (165775) in 19 volumes, 16 volumes in folio, and again (16981716) 20 volumes, 18 volumes in folio.
