Sengai Gibon

Sengai Gibon (1751–1837). Outstanding Zen artist and calligrapher. He became a monk at 11, and went on wandering pilgrimage (angya) when 19. He became dharma-successor (hassu) of Gessen Zenji, and was appointed abbot of Shōfuku-ji in 1790. He was noted also for his humorous instruction.
