Ich'adon, also known as Pak Yŏmch'ŏk, Yŏmch'ŏk, or Kŏch'adon (503–27). A martyr during King Pŏphŭng's reign (514–40) in the kingdom of Silla, in Korea. When the king's desire to establish and propagate Buddhism was thwarted due to ministerial opposition, Ich'adon, the Grand Secretary to the king, offered to be executed in the hope that, by witnessing miraculous phenomena resulting from his death, the ministers might be persuaded to look favourably upon the disfavoured religion. Ich'adon's martyrdom did, in fact, immediately bring about Silla's official recognition of Buddhism, dated 527.
