Hiravijaya (1527–95). Śvetāmbara Jain teacher. He belonged to the Tapa Gaccha, becoming head (suri) in 1566. In 1587, Akbar summoned him to court to give an account of Jain teaching. Hiravijaya singled out compassion to all forms of life, and as a result, Akbar ordered that caged birds should be freed and that animals should not be slaughtered on the Jain festival of Paryūṣana.
