John Milledge (mĬl´Ĭj), 1757–1818, American political leader, b. Savannah, Ga. In the American Revolution he was a prominent figure in the group that seized (1775) the colonial government at Savannah. A lawyer, he was a U.S. Representative (1792–93, 1795–99, 1801–2), governor of Georgia (1802–6), and a Senator (1806–9). The Univ. of Georgia campus is situated on land that he donated, and the city of Milledgeville was named in his honor.
