Ipiranga
Ipiranga (ēpēräng´gə), stream flowing near the city of São Paulo, Brazil. On its banks the regent Pedro (later Emperor Pedro I) issued the Grito do Ipiranga, the declaration of the independence of Brazil from Portugal, on Sept. 7, 1822. The event is commemorated by a monument and a historical museum.
