Danilo II
Danilo II (Danilo Petrović-Njegoš), 1826–60, prince of Montenegro (1851–60). He secularized (1852) his principality (chiefly in order to be able to marry) and transferred his ecclesiastic functions to an archbishop. Danilo and his brother Mirko defeated the Ottomans at Ostrong (1853) and at Grahovo (1858). Assassinated by a Montenegrin exile, Danilo was succeeded by his nephew, Nicholas I.
