Cimarron, Territory of
Territory of Cimarron, now the Panhandle of Okla. It was settled in the early 1800s by cattle ranchers, many of them squatters. To protect their claims they attempted, in 1887, to create a separate territorial government at Beaver, Okla. After subsequent efforts toward this end failed in the U.S. Congress, Cimarron became part of the Oklahoma Territory in 1890.
