Branner, John Casper
John Casper Branner, 1850–1922, American geologist, b. New Market, Tenn. He made geological investigations in Brazil (1874–84); the results of these studies and of others made in later years were published with the first complete geological map of the country in Outlines of the Geology of Brazil (1919). Branner was professor of geology at Indiana Univ. (1885–92; in 1887 he was appointed geologist of Arkansas, creating there a department which was a model for similar state work. In his long association with Stanford, Branner was professor of geology (from 1892), vice president (1899–1913), president (1913–16), and president emeritus (from 1916). He made studies of earthquakes, both in North and South America, and was a founder and president (1910–14) of the Seismological Society of America.
